Theory of scary films

How to make people scared in films
  • Limit the information in the frame
  • Guide them through the dialogue so it creates anticipation of whats happening
  • the story is told outside the frame in the minds of the audience
  • Tension often plays with the audiences fear of the unknown.
For example in Let the Right One In the audience is given just enough information to know what is going on. At swimming pool scene we an insert (a close of up on anything but an the actor's face) the shoes of one of the protagonists tormentors.

The next time we see these shows is when they are seeing kicking through the water.

We know this is the boy being dragged through the water - obviously in distress and in retribution for his earlier bullying. We don't see the violence, but we are left in little doubt what has just happened.
